Within us all, there lies dormant power. The breath before a decision, or a leap of faith. We feel this power every day. The power to give, to take, to create, and to destroy. Washington is home to five active volcanoes, each with the potential to create upheaval and discord. And that’s not even to speak of the “Big One” that lies on the future horizon. We all know this, and leave it, too, lying dormant in the back of our minds.

There coexists an opposite but equal truth to this power: some of the most fertile and abundant soil on the continent can be found near the lava fields of volcanic eruptions. Volcanoes and their potentiality are much like Newton’s third law of motion, that every action has an equal but opposite reaction. Destruction begets creation, and beauty conceals power.
